autumn 1853, joseon countryside
the disappearance of the second young lord had sent the manor into a frenzy – torches point at every nook and cranny to see if the child was simply hiding away in some faraway corner of the home. by the time the search moved to the streets, it was too late. the ten year old boy had been drugged by a scheming maid and hidden inside a carriage to the countryside.when the child, a young minho, had woken up he had realized what had happened and used whatever martial arts knowledge he had to fend off the kidnappers. not knowing where he was, minho decided to bide his time at a nearby village where a couple sheltered him.
spring 1856
days turned into months and eventually months would become three years. minho decides to conscript himself in the army (he faked his age, though from his appearance it was rather obvious that he was still a young boy) as an excuse to return to hanseong. bidding farewell to the family that had took him in, he traverses from the hilly steppes of hamgyeong to bustling hanseong in a matter of two weeks.as luck would have it, rain and ambushes had left him and the rest of the volunteers in a horrid state.from the thousands en route to hanseong, only a few hundred had survived the treacherous journey. he was one of the lucky ones, having known how to defend himself from a young age had come in handy when the ambushes became frequent. still, minho refuses to speak of his journey back home with anyone - as it means reliving those horrid memories.upon returning to hanseong, it was his brother who found him first - the older having become a second lieutenant in the midst of this. there was truly no time to question anything, knowing that both were too young to be in the armed forces. however - instead of removing him entirely, the duke had him continue working as a soldier.perhaps it was a way to prove himself, or a punishment for being careless all those years ago, what ever it was minho had become apathetic to it.

back in the city, the ryus had given the convenient excuse that minho had went abroad to further his studies – though that would be further from the truth, and the ton would catch on rather quickly. the murmurs would grow louder upon hearing the return of the second young lord - could it really be him, or perhaps a replacement?granted they had never known the second son even prior to his disappearance, his every move was scrutinized. truly, there was nothing to speculate - as the young marquess grew he bore a marked resemblance to his father. there was no denying that minho was his son. the whispers would then switch to questioning whether it was true that he had studied abroad. to which the duke and elders of the family all deflected, never allowing minho to speak of the real circumstances.speculations became hearsay and various assumptions were made by the public about his demeanor. most which amused minho more than it offended him, so no matter how many times his family had advised him to keep his restraint, the youth would continuously play into these rumors. it wasn't like they could do much about it.
